Starbuck
is the first perlino officially recognized by APHA. He is also the
first solid stallion to ever earn an APHA Championship, a Superior in
any event, and is the most successful solid stallion in the history of
the breed. Starbuck's combination of superb conformation, show
stopping presence, and absolutely breathtaking pearlescent cream and
gold color can take your breath away! The judges must agree: 51 out of
56 placed him first in Halter, and Starbuck is UNDEFEATED in
performance classes, earning Circuit Championships in Working Hunter,
Hunter Hack, Hunter Under Saddle, and Western Pleasure.
One of the first questions people ask when seeing
Starbuck for the first time is, "Just what
color is that horse?" Starbuck is a very rare perlino. Perlino is
created when a bay horse also is homozygous for the dilution factor
(the factor that causes buckskin.) Starbuck can be thought of as
homozygous buckskin. Since Starbuck has tested Red Factor E at UC
Davis, he is also homozygous for the bay color and will throw no
palomino foals. Perlino is a very beautiful, exotic color. Starbuck
is cream colored (you can still see his white facial and leg markings)
with metallic gold mane, tail, and legs. Starbuck's sire is a
registered dun, and since Starbuck has a gold dorsal stripe, we
believe that Starbuck may also carry the dun gene, though there
currently is no genetic test available to test for the dun factor.
Although Starbuck is APHA registered, his sire and dam
are both AQHA registered with proven bloodlines. Starbuck boasts a
versatile blend of Impressive, Boston Mac, and King Fritz. Starbuck
has lovely modern conformation with good bone and is a surprisingly
good mover for a horse of his pedigree. He also possesses the quiet,
agreeable temperament Quarter Horses are famous for. Starbuck loves
attention, even leaving food in favor of human company.
Starbuck
offers an opportunity to guarantee the popular buckskin color out of
your mare, in addition to current bloodlines and beautiful
conformation and temperament. We also look forward to seeing his
first crosses on Arabian mares in 2001. We feel he will be an
excellent sire to produce elegant, correct, and substantial half
Arabians. Starbuck's first half Thoroughbred foal was born in 2000 and
he is gorgeous! Check the foals page for photos of this elegant,
leggy, sporthorse type colt!
When breeding to Starbuck, your foal's exact shade of
buckskin will also depend on the color of your mare. Chestnut and
light, clear coated bay mares would be ideal to produce a light
buckskin foal with good contrast between body color and black points.
A dark bay/brown or black mare could also produce a much darker
buckskin, a color some might describe as closer to grulla (although
genetically speaking it would not actually be grulla). Since Starbuck
has a dorsal stripe, some foals will also have a dorsal stripe.
