Welcome
to IRC's Color Key
Pintos
& Paints

First, let us explain the
difference between the term Pinto and Paint:
A Pinto is a color reference, for example, colored Warmbloods are
pintos, Saddlebreds, Cross breds, ponies, etc. and some Paints have Pinto
coloring. There are Pinto horse registries such as PtHA, but it is not a
"breed" registry, it is a color registry. Paint is a
breed, registered by the American Paint Horse Association. The only
out crosses allowed are Thoroughbreds and Quarter horses. Not all Registered
Paints have to have pinto coloring.
Some of the different pinto
pattern names are: Tobiano, Overo, Frame Overo, Tovero (tobiano
& overo, combined), Splash White,
Sabino, Medicine Hat (usually also a tovero)
The terms Piebald and Skewbald
are not very descriptive of patterns just
colors, a Piebald is a black/w pinto and a Skewbald is generally a bay/w
pinto or any of the other colors, refer to as a chestnut Skewbald, etc.
Pintos can come in any color including but not limited to: blk/w, bay/w,
palomino/w, grey/w, buckskin/w, roan/w, etc. and a variety of genetic
patterns, so the terms Piebald
and Skewbald are somewhat limited. These terms are used widely in
England and the British Isles.

Tobiano

Various Tobiano patterns going from more body
white to less
Tobiano traits: tend to have 4
white legs, socks, stockings or all the way to body. They tend to
have "normal" head markings such as no facial markings,
stars, snips, blazes. They tend to have white crossing somewhere
over their top lines (spines) which sometimes gives two colored
manes and/or tail. They also tend to have stifle and chest
markings |

Homozygous Tobianos

State of the Art

State of the Art and Spotlight-IRC
stallions owned by Silverwood Farm and Red Fox Farm are both
homozygous, but they do not exhibit very many ink spots.

Ink Spots, which are considered
a character trait of some Homozygous Tobianos
This colt, Sculptor was tested by UCDavis, but his dams (Waterlilly)
pinto "markers" where similar to her solid
"markers" therefore the test was inconclusive, it did
show the colt received his sires pinto gene and that the colt also
had "linkage" which is indicative of being homozygous. Note
of interest-he is marked more similar to his dam then his sire
(Spectrum), who tends to throw marking similar to his own.
